XEC-2001 to RTF, RTF to XEC-2001
File Conversion Program
The program will convert TRF files (XEC-2001) to RTF/CRE files (Rich Text Format with Court Reporter Extensions). It will also convert RTF/CRE files (or just RTF) to TRF files. The RTF/CRE file format is a universal format that was developed to help various courtroom software programs communicate with each other. You must have XEC-2001 to install and use the converter program.

Installation instructions for downloaded version
When you download the program, you will specify a filename and directory in a “Save As” dialog window. After you select the “OK” button in this dialog window, a file will be copied (downloaded) to your computer in the directory you specified.
The file that you download is an installation program that installs the converter program on your computer. You will use the filename and directory name when you run the installation.
- Run XEC-2001.
- Select DOS prompt from the Utilities menu.
- Use the cd command to change directories to the one in which you saved the downloaded installation file. For example, if you downloaded the file to your C drive (your hard drive) into a directory named Convert, you would type cd C:\Convert and then press <Enter>.
- Wait for the prompt to reappear. Type install and press <Enter>. The converter program will be installed in your XEC-2001 user directory.
- When the prompt reappears, type Exit and press <Enter> to return to the XEC-2001.
Running the converter
- Run XEC-2001.
- Select DOS prompt from the Utilities menu.
- Type RTF-2001 and press <Enter>.
- The conversion program menu will appear.
Using the converter program
When opened, the program provides a menu screen with six options:
1) Convert XEC-2001 to RTF

X) Exit
A selection indicator arrow appears to the left of the menu list. You may use the up arrow and down arrow keys on your keyboard to move the indicator arrow among the options. When the indicator arrow is next to the desired menu option, press the <Enter> key to select.
You may also select a menu option by pressing the number or letter that appears to the left of the menu item.
Menu options 3 and 4 are configuration settings for the program. You should make sure these settings are correct before performing a conversion:
Setting option 3. Location of TRF files:
- Option 3 specifies where the program will place files that have been converted from RTF format to XEC-2001format. It also specifies where the program will look for XEC-2001files when converting XEC-2001 to RTF.
- If your XEC username is different from the default directory specified at option 3, you will need to change the location. Select option 3
- A prompt will appear asking “Where are the TRF files stored?” Type in the TRF file location, specifying the complete pathway. (e.g. C:\Trans\Bob). Press <Enter>. The converter menu will reappear and the selected file location will appear after option 3.
Setting option 4. Location of RTF files:
- Option 4 specifies where the program will place files that have been converted from XEC-2001 to RTF format. It also specifies where the program will look for RTF files when converting RTF to XEC-2001.
- The default location for this option is your A-drive. To specify another drive or directory, select option 4.
- A prompt will appear asking, “Where are the RTF files stored?” Type in the RTF file location, specifying the complete pathway. (e.g. A:\Examples\Richtext\). Press <Enter>. The converter menu will reappear and the selected file location will appear after option 4.
Performing file conversions, XEC-2001 to RTF
- Select menu option 1 from the converter menu. The converter will look in the directory specified in menu option 3, and a list of available TRF (the extension for XEC-2001) files will appear.
- Select the file you wish to convert and press the <Enter> key.
- A prompt will appear asking for the name of the “RTF file to Create:” Enter a name for the file and press <Enter>. The filename may contain up to eight characters.
- The file will be created and placed in the location specified in menu option 4. The converter menu will reappear. You may perform additional conversions or exit the converter.
Performing file conversions, RTF to XEC-2001
1. Select menu option 2 from the converter menu. The converter will look in the directory specified in menu option 4 and a list of available RTF files will appear.
2. Select the file you wish to convert and press the <Enter> key.
3. A prompt will appear asking for the name of the “TRF file to Create:” Enter a name for the file and press <Enter>. The filename may contain up to eight characters.
4. The file will be created and placed in the location specified in menu option 3. The converter menu will reappear. You may perform additional conversions or exit the converter by selecting the Exit option.
Note: The RTF/CRE format is designed to preserve many, but not all, formatting and transcription features. Exact reproductions are unlikely when converting jobs from one CAT system to another. Exiting the converter program
Select Exit from the converter menu. The menu will disappear. Type Exit at the prompt and press <Enter> to return to the XEC-2001 program. Once you select Exit from the converter menu, you cannot reopen the converter to perform additional conversions. You must return to the XEC-2001 and repeat the instructions for running the converter.
