Premier Power/RTF File Conversion Utility
Installation instructions for downloaded version
When you download the program, you will specify a filename and directory in a “Save As” dialog window. After you select the “OK” button in this dialog window, a file will be copied (downloaded) to your computer.
The file that you download is an installation program that installs the converter program on your computer. You will use the filename and directory name when you run the installation. You may install the program in DOS or from any version of Windows. You do not have to have Premier Power to install the converter program.
To print this document use your internet software's print command.
Installing in DOS:
- At the C:\> prompt, type the directory and filename of the downloaded installation program.
- Press <Enter>
- A directory named RTF will be created on your computer’s hard drive. The conversion program, named RTFPP is installed in this directory.
Installing in Windows 3.1:
- In the Windows 3.1 Program Manager, select Run from the File menu.
- Type the name of the drive and directory to which the installation program was downloaded, followed by the program’s filename (e.g. C:\download\convert).
- Press <Enter>.
- An directory named RTF will be created on your computer’s hard drive. The conversion program, named RTFPP, is installed in this directory.
Installing in Windows 95 (or higher) and Windows NT:
- Select Run from the Start button (located on the desktop taskbar)
- Type the name of the drive and directory to which the installation program was downloaded, followed by the program’s filename (e.g. C:\download\convert).
- Press <Enter> or click on the OK button.
- An RTF directory will be created on your hard drive. The conversion program files are installed in this directory.
Running the converter
Depending on your computer’s operating system, you may run the program in one of several ways:
- Type RTFPP and press <Enter> at a C:\> prompt in DOS.
- (Windows 3.1) Select Run from the File menu in the Program Manager. Type “RTFPP.exe and press <Enter>
- (Windows 95 and NT) Select Run from the Start button. Type C:RTFPP.exe and press <Enter> (or click the OK button).
- (Within Premier Power) Select Power DOS from the Tools menu. From the list of program files that appear, select RTFPP.
Using the converter program
The program will convert NGL files (Premier Power) to RTF/CRE files (Rich Text Format with Court Reporter Extensions). It will also convert RTF/CRE files (or just RTF) to NGL files. The RTF/CRE file format is universal format that was developed to help various courtroom software programs communicate with each other.
When opened, the program provides a menu screen with nine options:

A selection indicator arrow appears to the left of the menu list. You may use the up arrow and down arrow keys on your keyboard to move the indicator arrow among the options. When the indicator arrow is next to the desired menu option, press the <Enter> key to select.
You may also select a menu option by pressing the number or letter that appears to the left of the menu item.
Menu options 3-7 are configuration settings for the program. You should make sure these settings are correct before performing a conversion:
Setting option 3. Location of NGL files:
- Option 3 specifies where the program will place files that have been converted from RTF to Premier Power. It also specifies where the program will look for NGL files when converting from Premier Power to RTF.
- If the converter is installed on a computer that does not have Premier Power, the default location for this option is A:\Premier. If the machine does have Premier Power, the default location is C:\Power\USR\Admin. If the NGL files you wish to convert are located elsewhere, select option 3
- A prompt will appear asking “Where are the NGL files stored?” Type in the NGL file location, specifying the complete pathway. (e.g. C:\Trans\Bob). Press <Enter>. The converter menu will reappear and the selected file location will appear after option 3.
Setting option 4. Location of RTF files:
- Option 4 specifies where the program will place files that have been converted from Premier Power to RTF. It also specifies where the program will look for files RTF files when converting from RTF to Premier Power.
- If the converter is installed on a computer that does not have Premier Power, the default location for this option is C:\RTF. If the machine does have Premier Power, the default location is A: (your computer’s floppy disk drive). If the RTF files you wish to convert are located elsewhere, select option 4
- A prompt will appear asking “Where are the RTF files stored?” Type in the RTF file location, specifying the complete pathway. (e.g. A:\Examples\Richtext\). Press <Enter>. The converter menu will reappear and the selected file location will appear after option 4.
Margin settings for options 5-7:
- Options 5,6, and 7 allow you to specify how the program will interpret certain margin settings during a conversion. For example, if all colloquy in your Premier Power documents is indented to the secondary margin, you would set option 5 to colloquy. The values available for each of these options are none, paren (parenthetical), answer, question, and colloquy.
- To choose a value for one of the margin options, select the menu option. Press the <Enter> key or the number of the option to toggle among the available values. Continue to press the <Enter> key or the menu option number until the desired value appears.
Performing file conversions, Premier Power to RTF:
- Select menu option 1 from the converter menu. The converter will look in the directory specified in menu option 3, and a list of available NGL files will appear.
- Select the file you wish to convert and press the <Enter> key. A prompt will appear asking for the name of the “RTF file to Create:” Enter a name for the file and press <Enter>. The filename may contain up to eight characters.
- The file will be created and placed in the location specified in menu option 4. The converter menu will reappear. You may perform additional conversions or exit the converter.
Performing file conversions, RTF to Premier Power
- Select menu option 2 from the converter menu. The converter will look in the directory specified in menu option 4 and a list of available RTF files will appear.
- Select the file you wish to convert and press the <Enter> key. A prompt will appear asking for the name of the “NGL file to Create:” Enter a name for the file and press <Enter>. The filename may contain up to eight characters.
- The file will be created and placed in the location specified in menu option 3. The converter menu will reappear. You may perform additional conversions or exit the converter by selecting the Exit option.
Note: The RTF/CRE format is designed to preserve many, but not all, formatting and transcription features. Exact reproductions are unlikely when converting jobs from one CAT system to another. Exiting the converter program
Select Exit from the converter menu. The menu will disappear. If you are running the converter in a MS-DOS window, close the window. If you are not running the program from within a window, a C:\> prompt will appear. Type EXIT and press <Enter> to return to Windows.
